How To Buy An Amazing Dildo

There are a few things to consider when purchasing your first dildo. So if you’re in the market to get your first one or trying to level up your collection this is a great guide to get you started!

Budget

The first thing you will need to decide is how much you are willing to spend and set your expectations based on that. You should expect to spend somewhere in the ballpark of $60 for an average dildo. Much less than that and you are probably going to be dealing with poor quality. The more you spend, the better it will be. Real feel dildos that have soft silicone “skin” and a firm base are upwards of $100. Special colors, designs, etc are going to add to the price.

Use

How are you looking to use it? Dildos for anal are going to probably be smaller when you’re first starting out than for vaginal. That being said, the more experience you have the larger you can take especially since the anal cavity is way stretchier than the vagina.

Material

You want to make sure you are using a material that is body safe. Meaning that it won’t break down and there aren’t any pores that will hold onto bacteria and cause infection.

Rubber, TPE, or “jelly” dildos will have a smell and taste to them that never really goes away. They also have the tiny microscopic pores that can hold onto bacteria, meaning they will never be fully sterilized. If you use these, I reccomend using a condom especially if you are putting them in your vagina.

You also want to consider that these jelly dildo’s can melt silicone dildos if stored together. I lost my favorite silicone toy when I forgot to keep them separate in my most recent move. RIP.

Speaking of silicone, this is what I typically use. You can get toys in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and levels of hardness. This material can be boiled or washed with soap and water for sanitization.

There are some brands of silicone toys that are advertised as feeling like real skin. These are extremely fun and feel great, but keep in mind that the softer the material is the more easily it tears and rips. Any abrasion on your toy is an opportunity for bacteria to hide, so keep this in mind if you are planning to be rough.

Glass and Metal dildos are probably to cleanest, because it would be incredibly rare to have a scratch for bacteria to hide. They are easy to clean and have the unique benefit of being able to hold temperature for some fun sensory play. Personally, I hold glass dildos in extremely high esteem and view them as pieces of art. It is a big goal of mine to have a large glass dildo collection on display once I settle down into a permanent home.

Rarely, you will find wooden dildos as well. Most of these have been treated with chemicals that make them body safe. I would always always make sure to read any and all instructions on how to care for these toys, as they are very different from your traditional materials.

Design

When looking for a new toy, you want to have an idea of the general design you are looking for. Pretty much any sex toy store you visit will have your standard penis shaped dildo. But there is a big world out there of non-traditional toys just waiting for you to discover.

Brands like Bad Dragon, Sinnovator, and small creators on sites like Etsy create dildos in the shape of dragon, tentacle, and animal penises.

Geeky Sex Toys and She-Vibe feature toys in novelty shapes like Thors hammer or the eggplant emoji.

A Note on Lube

You always want to make sure that you use the right kind of lube with your toys. Rubber, TPE, jellies, and some silicone require water based lube to avoid breaking down the material. Other silicone toys, glass and metal can use silicone lube.
